      Teacher recruits for chess

By SARA KINCAID Posted: Saturday, January 23, 2010 2:00 am

      Chess is a recession-friendly game.

“It’s a relatively inexpensive game to play,” said Todd Wolf, one of the organizers of a new community chess club in Bismarck.

A chess set can be had for about $10, he said, compared with video game systems that cost a couple of hundred dollars for the console and games.

He will be teaching chess to students and any interested adults at the Bismarck Library on Monday evening. People can come to play the game or learn how to play. Wolf has coached many school chess clubs over the years.

He came into coaching chess a bit by accident. The chess club at his wife’s school wanted to go to the state scholastic chess tournament.
The adviser was unable to go, so he was asked to accompany the students because of his familiarity with Bismarck.

“It was my first experience with a chess tournament,” he said.

After that, he became more involved in chess.

Wolf started a chess club at his daughter’s school, Pioneer Elementary School, at the request of her teacher.

He would go to the school during his lunch hour to work with the fifth- and sixth-graders. Eventually, it moved to an after-school program.
