      The biggest threat to Carlsen?

Anish Giri, chess poll, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Magnus Carlsen, Sergey Karjakin, Wesley So
Which young phenom will be the biggest threat to Carlsen in the next 5-10 years?

I accidentally left out Vachier-Lagrave’s name on this list. He has to be considered on this list. I also did not put Aronian because I consider Aronian, Kramnik, and Anand, etc. the threat now. Wei Yi and Artemiev still need to prove that they can cross the 2700 barrier and win big tournaments, but they are ones to watch in the future.

I think Caruana and Karjakin are the best of that group, but I doubt any of them are a serious threat to Carlsen. Carlsen’s main future rival probably is still in his teens at the very least.

All of the above can be a threat to Carlsen EXCEPT Nakamura who likes to run his mouth more often than actually playing great chess against the elite. Chicken out of Norway Chess to play against Navarra is the pussy way to do it lol

With a further extensive training by the Polgar’s sisters, Wesley So can be a threat to Carlsen. The guy just had a coach for 2 years and under Susan Polgar has improved dramatically. Carlsen, aside from being talented, has the benefit of expert coaching for years thats why he is a class of his own. Wesley can accellerate his ascend and be a top 10 player this year. With coach Susan, great tournament selection and accurate, solid and creative play of Wesley So, he can be a threat in the future to Carlsen reign. He just have to listen to coach Susan more often and play smart chess always, regardless of rank/strenght of his opponents. GO WESLEY and THANK YOU Coach SUSAN POLGAR, God Bless You and Family.

Caruana is definitely the biggest threat. Him and Levon are the next in line. Why is Nakamura’s name even on the list of options? Is this a typo mistake or a bad joke? How can someone who is 0-10 vs Carlsen even be considered a threat?

Where is Aronian? He is of course a better threat to Carlsen than So or Nakamura or Karjak.

And why is Nakamura even in the list? He is seeking attention only by his mouth, not by his play.

I believe Wesley So will be a big threat to Magnus. He is the 8TH youngest grandmaster, the 2nd youngest to achieve 2600 rating and at 20yrs old reach world’s top 15. There is something to this kid that a former triple crown world champion Susan Polgar noticed and the world will be astonish in the next few years!!!!!

It’s unfortunate Ms Polgar is no longer posting at Chessgames.com, but giving the abuse that was being heaped at her in that site, it’s understandable.

When people bashed the Polgar’s sisters, it only means they caught their attention because their EXTREMELY GOOD as a player and coach. Sex barrier in chess propagates this mentality among male players, the male players cant accept the fact that female players is at par or in some cases better than any of the current elite grandmasters. And since Wesley So is the only high ranked player with a female coach and is performing extremely good so far, the bashers and haters of the Polgar sisters would continue. But the Polgar sisters would continue to shut their mouth with their play and coaching and NOT with their mouth. At least they have balls not unlike the american sushi grandmasters who talks a lot… of air like Lance Stephenson of the NBA Indiana Pacers bwhahaha Go Susan Polgar and Wesley So. God Bless

Where is Wey Yi? In 5-6 years he’ll be ready. Naka & So are not capable at all.

wei yi? he’s way to low, the chinaboy has no credentials, nothing to boast to. win elite tournaments first. he cant even beat wesley so.

Nakamura should be deleted in the list..0-10 against carlsen.

Wesley So is the “real deal!”

Wey Yi is like Nakamura all talk no balls. Proclaiming to be a future challenger to Carlsen at the earliest time of his career is typical Nakamura. He has to prove his self first by winning big and strong tournaments and go up the ranking board. Look at all the Chinese GM they are just contended to past 2700 level then they get stagnant there for life. Look at Caruana, he does not proclaim to be a challenger to Carlsen but he let his play do the talking. As to Wesley So, he is capable of becoming future challenger to Carlsen with his talent and extensive training, at least like Caruana both just let their play do the talking. In 5 to 6 years, Yei would be in the same situation as chinese GM, a mediocre 2700 plus GM who likes to play in weak tournaments to pad their elo points.

Between So, Karjakin, Caruana, Giri, and Vachier-Legrave I am not sure that any are a threat. They are potential contenders to challenge Carlsen, but not a threat. Then there is also the future challenge that may come from Vladistav Artiemev (sp?) and Wei Yi. Which right now, they do not seem imposing but really neither did Carlsen at 17. Then if Rapport matures more in his play, there is also possibilities of him becoming a challenging power in the next few years to Carlsen. For right now we can only sit and wait to see what might become of Samuel Sevian and Jeffrey Xiong in the next 4-5 years. But really the threat to Carlsen’s supremacy may not show until some of the players born after 2000 start to mature.

Caruana seems to me the biggest future threat to Magnus Carlsen. He’s about to get past 2800 rating.

Wesley So has a lot of potential, but we don’t know how good he really is until he gets invited to the best tournaments.

Carlsen’s results were boosted a lot after his cooperation with Kasparov. I think So also needs to have a coach of Kasparov’s caliber to take the last step towards 2800 rating.

Remember that when Carlsen climbed to the top he had a lot of not great results in the best tournaments. It takes time to figure out how to play against the superstars. Dominating 2600 tornaments is completely different from getting a good result in a 2750 tournament.

Caruana is fighting for victories in the best tournaments. So he just needs to qualify for the next candidate tournament and we will probably have a new challenger for Carlsen, if Carlsen manages to beat Anand again. So has a long way to go before he will get qualified for the candidate tournaments.

How would so qualify if he does not even play in strong tournaments? So far the strongest tourneys he played are Tata Steel, Capablanca, World Cup and Chess Olympiad the rest are Garbage Tournaments. He should be playing in Norway Chess, Dortmund, Tal Memorial and Biel instead of playing in pussy and weak tournaments like the Las Vegas Chess Festival – National Open and Edmonton International they are trash tournaments. Not a good follow up to his win in Capablanca.

Garry K himself, said Nakamura is a threat to Carlsen. Garry also said something negative about Caruana’s chances just this week in Norway. Well I hope the Nakamura detractors are proven wrong, heh heh…
