
Sevillano, Milovanovic, Shabalov tie at U.S. Open

State champion and International Master Enrico Sevillano of Tehachapi tied for first place in the 109th U.S. Open in Dallas, Texas. Sevillano, IM Rade Milovanovic (Texas) and a former U.S. champion, Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov (Pennsylvania) scored 8-1 in the 377-player tournament, the longest-running national championship in the world. (Sevillano finished 1st on tie-breaks)
Three more players with Southern California connections finished among the leaders. Former state champion IM Doug Root, who has lived in Texas since 1992, took fourth prize with 7 1/2 -1 1/2 . Root, a professor at the University of North Texas-Denton, had not competed in eight years. Masters Joel Banawa and Julian Landaw tied for fifth place by scoring 7-2.
