Sac to Win in Chess – The King’s Indian Defense
Posted on July 23, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Chess Openings, Strategy & Game Review
The King’s Indian Defense is an outrageously complicated opening due it’s clearly double-edged natural structure. A closed center indicates black will attack on the kingside and white will attack on the queenside. In this round 5 encounter at the 2012 National Open I had the black pieces against FM Nick Raptis. I responded to his 1. d4 with the King’s Indian Defense and he adopted the Aronin-Taimanov system with 9. Ne1. Black quickly tried to […]

Should Parents Learn to Play Chess Too?

Posted on July 22, 2012 by Laura in General Chess Articles
As a chess coach I have had the opportunity to speak with many parents. Having enrolled their children in our program, they usually understand the benefits of chess. However, I have discovered that many parents don’t know how to play chess, or haven’t played in decades. These parents don’t play with their children, which means the child often doesn’t get a chance to play chess in-between our lessons. This makes it harder to teach the […]

Vegas Poolside Blitz – Stewart vs GM Ron Henley – Round 1 – Reti Opening
Posted on July 20, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Blitz/Bullet Chess, Strategy & Game Review
The Las Vegas International Chess Festival 2012 was an awesome event and I have to give a special thanks to GM Ron Henley for convincing me to come out and make the trip. Not only did GM Henley arrange my interview with former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov, he agreed to play a few poolside blitz games at the Riviera Hotel. This video is Game 1 of our 4 game match, where I opened with […]

Las Vegas International Chess Festival 2012
Posted on July 19, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Non-Chess related, Tournament Updates
The Las Vegas International Chess Festival 2012 was a resounding success, bringing together a large amount of quality chess events at the Riviera Hotel through the June heat in Vegas. The National Open chess tournament featured a star-studded cast of strong Grandmasters: Lenderman, Gareev, Akobian, Shankland, Robson, etc. and was a very hard-fought 6 round Open event. Aleks Lenderman took clear first place to win $6,400 USD. Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov also made […]
