Top chess in the heart of Amsterdam

The youngest grandmaster in the world, Parimarjan Negi, the youngest grandmaster ever, Sergey Karjakin, and former world champion Alexander Khalifman are only a few of the stars who will compete in the NH Chess Tournament that will take place in Amsterdam from Wednesday, August 22, through Saturday, September 1.

For the second time NH Hoteles, in close cooperation with Association Max Euwe in Monaco, organizes a Scheveningen team tournament between young rising stars and experienced world class players. Just like last year the splendid venue is the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, centrally located on Dam Square, at walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station.

Admission is free and every day there’s live commentary for the spectators by experts such as Lex Jongsma, Gert Ligterink, Hans Ree, Genna Sosonko and Cor van Wijgerden. The daily rounds start at 13.30 hours, with the exception of the last round on September 1, which starts at 12.00 hours. Monday, August 27 is a free day.

The ‘Experience’ team consists of Alexander Beliavsky (Slovenia), Artur Jussupow (Germany), Alexander Khalifman (Russia), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia) and Predrag Nikolic (Bosnia).

The ‘Rising Stars’ team consists of Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria), Sergey Karjakin (Ukraine), Parimarjan Negi (India), Jan Smeets (The Netherlands) and Daniel Stellwagen (The Netherlands).

During ten rounds every member of the one team plays every member of the other team with both colours. Apart from money prizes for the winning team (and the losing team) there are a couple of additional prizes. The most attractive prize goes to the best player on the ‘Rising Stars’ team (provided he has a positive score): he will be invited to the 2008 Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament in Monaco.

The games will be broadcast live on the official website www.nhchess2007.nl where you can also watch the games and the press conferences after the rounds in streaming video. But, if you have the possibility, of course it’s even more fun to drop by in ‘Kras’, as Amsterdammers fondly call the Krasnapolsky Hotel.

This is a very strong event. The kids will win easily.

This was a wonderful event last year. The official site featured live cameras at each game, so you could watch the players as well as see the JavaScript board and the scoresheet.

My all time favorite GM is back – Ljubomir Ljubojevic. I look forward to watching him annihilate the young kids.
