Top two Cuban players in the 3rd round

      Bruzon, Khanty-Mansiysk, World Cup

Cuba’s Lazaro Bruzon Joins Leinier Dominguez in Third Round of World Chess Cup

      Friday, 02 September 2011 08:35

Havana, Cuba, Sept 2.- Cuban Grand Master (GM) Lazaro Bruzon joined his compatriot GM Leinier Dominguez in the third round of the World Chess Cup, under way in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk, after beating Spanish GM Francisco Vallejo 2.5-1.5 in the second stage of the competition.

After tying with Vallejo 1-1 in their two classical games —he won on Wednesday and lost on Thursday—, Bruzon managed to eliminate his rival on Friday’s rapid tie-break matches with a tie and a victory.

Thus, the Cuban player joined his compatriot in the third round or Round of 32 as Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, had already secured a spot in the next stage with a 1.5-0.5 victory over Moldovan GM Viktor Bologan (2,678).

Others who advanced to the Round of 32 include GMs Vassily Ivanchuk and Rusland Ponomariov, of Ukraine; Peter Svidler, Dmitry Jakovenko, Alexander Grischuk, and Gergey Karjakin of Russia; Teimour Radjabov, Vugar Gashimov, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, of Azerbaijan; Gata Kamsky of the United States; and Czech David Navara.
