Topalov in the new WC cycle

      Topalov, World Championship

Topalov in the new World Chess Championship cycle

In connection with setting-up the new system, the Presidential Board was determined to close matters related to the previous and recent WCCh cycles. Regarding one of the most critical issues in the world chess community, the Presidential Board received the delegation of the Bulgarian Chess Federation including Ms. Vessela Letcheva, Minister of Sport, Mr. S. Sergei, President of the Federation and Mr. S. Danailov, manager of GM Topalov.

After presenting its evaluation of the situation that former world champion GM Veselin Topalov was unable to participate in the ongoing WCCh cycle anymore and may lose such an opportunity for two years, the Bulgarian delegation accepted the proposal of the FIDE Presidential Board. In accordance with the decision, GM Topalov will have an eight-game Challenger Match against the winner of the 2007 World Cup in the year 2008 as part of the new WCCh cycle.

The winner of that Challenger Match can play against the winner of the 2008 Universal Event Promotion match (UEP) in 2009 for the World Chess Championship title (as can be seen in the diagram). The minimum prize fund for the Challenger Match is set at 150 000 USD. The Bulgarian Chess Federation has expressed its wish to organize the Challenger Match.

According to the regulations if GM Kramnik wins the WCCh tournament in Mexico City 2007, a match between GM Kramnik and GM Topalov, the current and the previous world champions, will take place in 2008. In that case, the winner of the Kramnik-Topalov match will play against the winner of the 2007 World Cup.

But what the heck does this latest Fide-Info mean??
        Need help… thx.

This is a very bad thing. After all the unforgivable things that Topailov did to the world of chess, and their unrepentance (the book they published, and Danailov accusing Kramnik of cheating as late as last week) are now rewarded with a World Championship match, that comes out of nowhere. Topalov’s rating and results have been going down, and now he gets a Wch match. How must Aronian, Radjabov etc. feel?

This is pure corruption. Topalov deserves to be banned from chess because he continues with his blackmailing, and threats and personal attacks, and not a world championship match without even the need to qualify!!

I hope Kramnik threatens to withdraw from Mexico now. It’s the only thing that can save the world championship now, if FIDE insist on favouring Topalov, like they did in Elista.

How did Topalov earn this right ? Why cant, say, Anand get this luxury ? What is the basis for this ? This even feels like Kramnik got the worse end of the FIDE rubbish.

Topa needs to qualify next time with all the other contenders to get the right to play whoever wins this WC.

Now that he isn’t even no 1, he has -absolutely- no right to this.

FIDE’s ongoing mishandlings of the WCChamp title were enabled by the verbal support FIDE got for Kirsan’s bogus decree that San Luis 2005 was for the world title.
You people know who you are.

As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Kramnik recently got Kirsan to agree that the Mexico 2007 winner will promptly play a 1-on-1 WCChamp title match against Kramnik.
This forces common sense to see Mexico 2007 as a grand tournament to determine the next match title challenger for Kramnik!

        ‘It is very bad thing’….
For Hensel and his business only!
For the chess it is OK that ex-champion is reincluded in the competition as he was excluded by Hensel and Fide manouvers.

I like this resolution by FIDE. Topalov can stop crying now and play. Also, if Kramnik disagrees and leaves, he will lose his title. Period.

        very bad desicion:
it is only means that the next World Championship Match will be in 2009 and Topalov and Kramnik already in semifinals, moreover
the Kramnik semifinal (UEP) will be organized by Kramnik Team, and Topalov semifinal (Challeger Match) will be organized by Topalov Team. But probably life will make some healthy corrections.

Well, I think that sounds quite interesting with getting the WC challenger out of a match between the knock-out winner of the World Cup and the Grand Prix champion.

I guess we will have the best player in the world as the WORLD CHAMPION.

However, I doubt that all this is really going to happen because FIDE had major problems to find sponsors in the past. And, I am not too certain if Kok can help when the current FIDE board is still in power.

Anyway, as dubious as Danailov might be, he has got some really good ideas for chess e.g. Sofia-rule and the Grand Prix!

It is brutal chess politics of FIDE at its worst.
