UCF needs sh300m to host Africa Individual Chess Championship
      By Vision Reporter
      21st January 2016

The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) is need of sh300m to host the Africa Individual Championship starting May 20 to 31 in Kampala.

UCF president Vianney Luggya said that they have so far received 10,000 euros (about sh38m) from the international body, FIDE, but are still short of sh300m to make sure the event is a success.

“FIDE offered us some money to host the continental event but it’s still not enough. We are now looking for sponsors to fund the event since the contribution from FIDE is not enough to run the whole event.” Luggya said as they unveiled the 2016 Calendar at a press conference at Lugogo.

Luggya added that the amount will, among others cater for two players from each participating country, hiring of the venue, refreshments and officials facilitation.

Meanwhile other events on the calendar include, the Olympiad qualifiers, Kampala Juniors Classic, the National Chess Championship, the chess league and World Chess Olympiad scheduled for Baku, Azerbaijan in September.

National Council of Sports (NCS), assistant general secretary David Katende pledged to work closely with UCF in a bid to make the event a success.

“It’s a little late to start looking for sponsors but we (NCS) promise to work closely with UCF to make sure we raise the sum needed to make sure the event is colorful,” Katende said.
