Round 6 report
The 6th round was quite peaceful – 5 games were drawn and the only one game was scored today. Playing White a former World Champion Zhu Chen managed to win against Armenian Elina Danielian. Ruan Lufey and Munguntuul Bathhuyagh signed the score sheets after 14 moves while other players continue to play. The games between four leaders Hou Yifan-Anna Muzychuk, Zhao Xue-Tan Zhongy finished with draw results although this outcome didn’t change the tournament situation among the leaders. Viktorija Cmilyte saved the worse position against Betul Yildiz.
Munguntuul Bathhuyagh – Ruan Lufey 1/2 – 1/2
Opponents chose Spanish Defense in the opening. After 14 moves it was finished by repetition in a well-known L’Hermet Variation..
Munguntuul Bathhuyagh: During home preparation I didn’t want to play Berlin Wall against Ruan Lufey, so I decided to play this line with possible repetition. I was ready to continue playing in case if she refused to repeat the moves.
Ruan Lufey: I’m satisfied with the result today. When I planned to play Berlin Wall I was ready for a draw. I know the variation with repetition so if I go there it means the game can finish quickly.
Yildiz Betul – Viktorija Cmilyte 1/2 – 1/2
Sicilian Defense was played in the game. Black decided to sharp the position after 9…Nc6 but could receive a bad position after 14.Qb8, the move which was missed by both opponents. White transferred the game into better endgame with two bishops and extra pawn but lost some chances and didn’t manage to win the game.
Betul Yildiz: I think I’ve got a good position from the opening. Later on I transferred the game into the endgame. In the bishop and rook ending I wanted to play f5 in some moment but then my opponent found good moves and defended her position.
Viktorija Cmilyte: It`s not a surprise for me that my position could be lost in one move. I was afraid of her move 25.c6, I thought It might be losing position for Black after that. After 25.Rb5 I thought I could block the position somehow.
Adrian Mikhalchishin: It seems White played quite logical in the endgame but after they centralized and put their pieces in the good positions it was impossible to find any good plan for win.
Zhu Chen – Elina Danielian 1 – 0
Slav Defense happened in the game. Black sacrificed a pawn but didn’t get enough compensation after that. Later on White sacrificed a rook by playing 26. Rc6 and won the game.
Elina Danielian: I decided to sacrifice a pawn, I’m not sure if it was correct. I thought it was interesting line. Afterwards I didn’t play well; maybe I could improve my position. I think Qe5 was not correct it was possible to choose Ne5 or Bd6 instead.
Zhu Chen: the position was complicated. I think it was a little bit early for Black to sacrifice a pawn. I play this variation by both colors, so I think its better just to hold the position. After she sacrificed a pawn I was just playing.
Zhao Xue – Tan Zhongyi 1/2 – 1/2
Ragozin Variation was chosen in the game between two Chinese players. White didn’t play accurately in the opening but later on got some winning chances in the endgame.
I’ve played many games in that opening and my opponent played only two games, so I think I was more experienced in such positions. In the middle game I think b3 was not good because after Bf5 probably I have nothing. Instead I could have played e3. She missed some chances during the game and in the endgame maybe I had some chances to win.
Tan Zhonhyi: Definitely the endgame was worse for me. I mixed everything in the opening. Yesterday I checked the lines but today I got up late so I forgot to prepare this line. After 8.g3 I was out of preparation.
Hou Yifan – Anna Muzychuk 1/2 -1/2
Ruy Lopez, Anderssen Variation was played today, Hou Yifan was trying to avoid main lines and Black managed to equalize the position. Later on Black didn’t play accurately in the endgame and had to find precise moves in order to equalize the position again.
Hou Yifan: In the opening the position was equal, I didn’t get anything special. We changed the queens very quickly and the endgame it was completely equal again. Later on Black made some little mistakes and White had slightly better position. Maybe I could have played better at some point but I didn’t see where.
Anna Muzychuk: Of course I tried to prepare to all possible lines today – with Bc4 and Bb5 as well. Yifan chose the line with d3 but I was preparing for other variations in Spanish. I was satisfied when I got this ending because I was sure I would not have any problems. Later on I didn’t play so precisely. It was not a good idea to put my bishop on b7. I’m sure there were some ways to equalize the position. In one moment I had to start putting my pieces on the beginning positions – it looked like I was ready to start a new game (laughing).
Ekaterina Kovalevskaya – Ju Wenjun 1/2 – 1/2
Ekaterina Kovalevskaya: I think I got slightly better position in the opening. It was better to play Qd2 instead of Qb3. I was not expecting d5 in the opening. I knew about the existence of that move but I thought she would prefer more sharp variations. Probably after previous game we are both satisfied with the result.
Ju Wenjun: My opponent got a little edge from the opening but after we changed Queens the endgame should be equal. Move d5 seemed a little slow because my previous move was d6. I`m satisfied with the result today and I’ve already forgotten about my previous game – new day is a new day.
