      Zaven Andriasian wins Armenian Championship

      Andriasian, Armenia

      Andriasian Zaven-001

The 76th Armenian Men’s Individual Chess Championship took place from January 12th to January 23rd, 2016, in Armenian capital Yerevan.

The Highest League of the Armenian championship was organized by the Armenian Chess Federation in a 12-player single round-robin format with time control 90’/40 moves + 30’ + 30”.

The 2006 World Junior champion GM Zaven Andriasian emerged a solo winner with 8/10 points, leaving the runner-up GM Robert Hovhannisyan half a point behind. Andriasian was barely sixth seed but his blistering start (5.5/6 points) and solid play at the finish (five draws out of 5 games) ensured him the title. The champion added new 16 Elo points to come back to “Club 2600+”.

GM Arman Pashikian edged GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan on tie-break to take the bronze, after both players finished the event with 6.5 points.
