16th Asian Games – Team Chess Championship
Leading groups forming after round 2
On the second day of the Team Championship for Men & Women in the 16th Asian Games being held at the Guangzhou Chess Institute, China, India, Vietnam & Kazakhstan are in the front with full 4 points in the Men’s section & three teams are on 4 points in the women section.
China, India, Vietnam & Kazakhstan won their games today against Philippines 3-1, Uzbekistan 4-0, Iran3.5-0.5 & Qatar 2.5-1.5 respectively. For China Zhou Jiancho & Ni Hua won in the bottom two boards while Wang Yue & Bu Xiagzhi drew in the top boards.
India swamped Uzbekistan with Harikrishna, Sasikiran, Ganguly & Gopal winning their games. These four teams are upfront with 4 match points. In other games of round 2, Bangladesh beat Lebanon 4-0, Yemen beat Iraq 3-1, Korea beat Jordan 3.5-0.5 & Mongolia drew with Kyrgyzstan 2-2.
In the women’s section, China, India & Vietnam won their games to be on top with 4 match points each. China defeated Iran 3-1 with Hou Yifan & Huang Qian winning their games while the other two boards were drawn. India managed to keep their match points intact as they rode on fourth board win by Nisha Mohata, while they drew the other three boards. Vietnam blanked Bangladesh 4-0 to join the two top seeds China & India to be with four full match points. On the other matches of the day, Mongolia beat Syria 3-0, Turkmenistan beat Korea 3-1 & Jordan lost to Qatar 0-4.
As said in our earlier report, the Championship will be held in two phases. Phase one – Preliminaries – will be seven round Swiss to determine the four qualifiers for the semifinals. Each team’s place in order of classification shall be decided by the number of Match points it has scored.
Phase two will be Semifinals. Qualifiers will be paired by their Preliminaries ranking. Match A will be between 1 & 4 and Match B will be between 2 & 3. The two winners shall play the finals on 26th Nov.
17 teams have entered the competition in the men’s section and 12 in the women’s section with China & India being the top & second seeds in both the sections.
