      17 GMs to participate in Mumbai Mayor’s Cup

      Mumbai Mayor’s Cup attracts 17 Grand Masters

      MUMBAI: Around 17 GMs and 30 International Masters and women GMs from 10 countries including seven from India, are to compete in the 4th Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Chess Tournament at the Goregaon Sports Club from September 16.

      The tournament has attracted entries from Bangladesh, Uganda, Nepal, Ukraine, Armenia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Poland and Israel, apart from the host country and carries a total prize money of Rs 14 lakh, including the winner’s purse of Rs 3.01 lakh, a media release said on Tuesday.

      Russian GM Maxim Turov, with a rating of 2643, is the top seed in the the tournament which is being organised by Venus Chess Academy and Bombay Chess Association, sponsored by Mumbai Municipal Corporation and co-sponsored by LIC of India.

      The event offers a fine opportunity for India’s aspiring players to achieve their GM and IM norms and title. The GM entrants with their ratings are: Maxim Turov 2643, Martyn Kravtsir 2583, Andrey Deviatkin 2580, Deep Sengupta 2572, Nikolai Chadaev 2564, Tigran Kontanjin 2546, Bartlomiej Heberla 2539, Sethuraman 2529, Abhijit Kunte 2528, Ziaur Rehman 2528, Dzhumaev Marat 2492, Enamul Hossain 2481, S Kidambi 2474, Deepan Chakravarthy 2470, Neelotpal Das 2458, Alexi Alexandrov 2457 and R Laxman 2451.
