FIDE Congress to approve 2 vice-presidents to be nominated by FIDE president

      01.10.2010, 01.50

KHANTY-MANSIISK, October 1 (Itar-Tass) — The current 81tst Congress of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) on Friday will approve two FIDE vice-presidents to be nominated by its newly-elected president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

According to Ilyumzhinov’s aide Berik Balgabayev, the president will name his nominees on Friday. Participants in the congress expect that these will include the head of China’s Chess Federation and ex-world champion Anatoly Karpov. Shortly after Ilyumzhinov was re-elected president, he offered Karpov to take up the post of vice-president. Negotiations with Karpov were held throughout last night, but as of yet he has not arrived at a final decision.

On Wednesday, the FIDE Congress re-elected Ilyumzhinov, who has headed the federation since 1995, FIDE President by a margin of 95 to 55 votes.
