Dimakiling recovers, Olay falls in third

The 10th-ranked Dimakiling (ELO 2427), thus, improved to share the 11th to 28th place with two points, alongside compatriots Fide Master David Elorta (ELO 2552), IM Emmanuel Senador, FM Sumiya Bilguun of Mongolia, Nelson Villanueva, FM Paulo Bersamina, WIM Catherine Perena, Nelson Mariano III, IM Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa of Mongolia, Jelvis Calvelo, IM Rolando Nolte, Grand Master Aleksandr Rakhmanov of Russia, IM Barlo Nadera, GMs John Paul Gomez, Oliver Barbosa and Richard Bitoon and FMs Jony Habla and Christopher Castellano.
Dimakiling, a former De La Salle University standout, was set to play 35th-seed Mongolian Bilguun in the next round.
Kidapawan City-born Olay (ELO 2353), seeded 18th, was upset by 45th-seed Edsel Montoya to share the 29th to 41st place with 1.5 points. Olay’s next assignment is 52nd-seed WFM Rulp Ylem Jose.
La Salle-Taft Chess Coach FMr Randy Segarra (ELO 2311) turned back former olympian No.13 seed Nadera (ELO 2392).
Segarra figured in a five-way tie with four other chess players atop the tournament ranking in the US$30,000 Smart-sponsored nine Round-Swiss tournament hosted by the PSC and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
In other matches saw, Paragua toppled NM Nelson Villanueva (ELO 2268); Laylo routed FM David Elorta (ELO 2343); Pascua subdued Nelson ‘Elo’ Mariano III (ELO 2251) and Munkhgal upset countryman GM-elect Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa (ELO 2522). (MLSA)
