      3-peat for Shirov in Estonia

      The Estonian Sports Association Kalev organized the 22nd International Rapid Chess Tournament Paul Keres Memorial on 11-13 January at the Sokos Hotel Viru in Tallinn, Estonia.

      Rapid Chess Tournament “Remembering Paul Keres” is Estonia’s largest international chess event, held to mark the Estonian chess legend’s 97th birth anniversary. 

      Grandmaster Alexei Shirov rounded up a trifecta of titles as he won his third consecutive (and 5th overall) trophy in the Paul Keres Memorial.

      Shirov won the main final tournament with 6,5/9 points leaving a group of followers half a point behind. 

      Main Tournament, final standings:
       
      1. GM Shirov Alexei LAT 2739 – 6.5
      2-4. GM Ehlvest Jaan USA 2511, GM Volodin Aleksandr EST 2441 and GM Fridman Daniel GER 2646 – 6
      5. GM Sveshnikov Evgeny LAT 2543 – 5.5
      6-7. GM Malisauskas Vidmantas LTU 2503 and GM Maiorov Nikita BLR 2535 – 4.5
      8. GM Khalifman Alexander RUS 2660 – 4
      9. WGM Reizniece-Ozola Dana LAT 2259 – 1.5
      10. WGM Berzina Ilze LAT 2258 – 0.5

      The Main Tournament was a rapid chess (15 minutes + 10-second increment) round-robin tournament. Five players qualified from the Preliminary Tournament, three were personally invited from abroad and two were invited from Estonia.

      The Preliminary Tournament was a Swiss system 7-round rapid chess (15 minutes + 5-second increment) open event in one group.
