Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Are you looking at me boy?
No sir, I am looking up too 🙂
Scary opponent across the board.
Naka has to come up with his steely eyes too 🙂
Note also that a woman can tie for first if she wins and the leaders draw. Nana Dzagnidze already has a Wikipedia page mentioning her performance in this event.
However, something tells me that Nakamura-Gashimov is not going to end in a draw. NB: The top boards start at 4am ET, five hours early. The tourney front page says Here’s how it works… players who still have a chance of coming first play their games five hours early tomorrow (at 10:00 GMT+1 precisely). It is not clear whether that includes the people on 6.5 going down to 6th board with Ms. Dzagnidze. Indeed, the notice also says that a TPR (tournament performance rating) tiebreak is used to filter the tied players down to a maximum of 4, who then face off in a rapid playoff. Unlike Sonnenborg-Berger, it is possible to compute TPR ahead of time (assuming people on 7.0 draw/lose and whoever on 6.5 win), so several of those on 6.5 can be ruled out now, and any game involving two of them could be started at the normal time.
Complicated! One other thing about what people call “Web 2.0”—if we wake up at 7am to find the leaders have already agreed draws that weren’t forced, we can make rude comments in their blogs :-).
Am I getting this right? There’s a 2187 rated IM with a performance over 2500 in 11th place above Vachier, Roiz, Sokolov, Beliavsky and Gurevich et al ??
Naka just drew his game, so he rather won’t win this tournament
