
Dmitry Kokarev wins Mumbai Mayor’s Cup chess

Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Kokarev drew his final match to emerge as the winner in the Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open Chess tournament at the Goregaon Sports Club here today.
Kokarev, with an ELO rating of 2612, offered a draw after just seven moves in the last round match, which was readily accepted by his opponent German Grandmaster Luther Thomas to end drew curtains to his campaign on nine points.
On the second board, top seed Russian Grandmaster Alexy Dreev, who needed an outright win to join Kokarev at the top, had to settle for a draw after 11 moves to finish his proceedings on 8.5 points.
Brazilian grandmaster Alexandr Fier (ELO 2581) fought hard against Russian Grandmaster Maletin Pavel (ELO 2584) to settle for a draw after 65 moves.
