Leave it to Shirov to finish a game with fireworks;-) He’ll go down in chess history as one of the more popular non-champions, like Rubinstein, Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch, Keres, etc.
23….Qxh6 is only move 24. for example let’s say 23…Qf5? 24. Nf6+ gxf6 25. Bxf6! Ng6 only 26. 0-0! threatening qh4 etc so 26..Qxf4 27.Rxg6+! Kh7 28. Rg7+ Kh6 29. Rxf4 etc. about the same if 23…Qg4
24. Nf6+! Qxf6 ( 24…Kh8 25.Bg5! and the black queen is trapped after say 25…Ng6 26.Qg3 althought its a little tricky after 26…Re8+ just 27.Kf2) 25. Bxf6 gxf6 26.0-0 and the threat of Qxf6 and Rf4-h4 is just too powerful. for instance 26…Nxc4 27.qg3+ kh8 28. Rf4 and rh4 mate next. or 26…Nbd7 27. Qh6! threatening the rook lift again *note …ng6 is always met by Qxg6+* 27…Re8 28. Rf4 Nf8 29. Qxf6! and black can resign 29…Be6 30.Qxe5 or 29…Nfg6 30.Bxf7+!. It was pretty obvious this was home preparation Wang got caught up in . I remember seeing this line played last year. Naiditsch-Anand or something. I think Wang resignation was maybe a little premature but he didnt see a logical defense…plus maybe he just knew from Shirov’s confidence and the speed of his replies if that was the case that he just had it all worked out….which he probably did. Not to take away from Shirov’s brilliance but once he starts this type of flurry u can pretty much resign 🙂

1. If 1…gxh6 then 2.Nf6+ forks the queen.
2. If 1…Qxh6 then 2.Nf6+ Kh8 3.Bg5 wins as 3…Qg6 4.Qh4+ wins, so the black queen is lost.
