      Just a misunderstanding

      Anand, World Champion

      Statement was misconstrued, says Anand

NEW DELHI: Together, they make a pretty picture and looked prettier when taken in a procession in a vintage car escorted by mounted men in uniform.

World chess champion Viswanathan Anand and wife Aruna braved an unusually hot autumn sun during the “felicitation function” that included the couple’s brief ride in the red vintage car in the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on Tuesday.

Anand waved at the hundreds of school children who were lined up for the show. Later, a smiling Anand formally declared open the NIIT Mind Champions Academy and played chess with 32 select players who formed eight teams of four each.

      Great fun

“This was indeed the best part of the trip so far. Some of the children even advised me on some moves. It was great fun,” said Anand after the function.

When a mediaperson asked about his reported statement on looking for the kind of reception similar to what the victorious Twenty20 World Cup cricketers received, Anand chose to set the record straight.

“Let me say that my statement was misconstrued. All I said then (after winning the World championship) was… let’s see what kind of reception I get. I think enough has been said on the reception (at the airport). Now I think it is time to move on,” said Anand.
