      A new athletic trend in chess

      Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St Louis, SPICE, St Louis, US Championship, Webster University


      On the day off at the 2014 US Championship, many players followed Magnus Carlsen’s footsteps (Magnus came to Webster University on days off during the Sinquefield Cup last year to play soccer and basketball) by coming to Webster University to play soccer and basketball.

        There’s nothing new about it. Kotov writes that most Soviet top grandmasters were experts (equivalent of 2000+ in chess) in some other, physical sport like tennis or swimming.
