      ACP Golden Classic in Bergamo

      ACP, Bergamo, Italy

The ACP Golden Classic international chess tournamentwill be held in Bergamo, Italy, from 12 to 20 July 2014.

The tournament is organized by Asd Caissa Italia and Società Scacchistica Bergamo, under the patronage and sponsorship of the Municipality of Bergamo and other commercial, industrial and non-for profit partners.

The tournament is meant to be the main event for 2014 in the agenda of the Association of Chess Professionals(ACP).

The field includes several among the world’s top players, who are going to battle it out in a 7 round-robin tournament staged in the landmark Auditorium, right at the heart of the city of Bergamo.

Participants are GM Wesley So (PHI); GM Teimour Radjabov (AZE); GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (RUS); GM Zoltan Almasi (HUN); GM Emil Sutovsky (ISR) – who is also the President of the ACP –; and Italian GMs Sabino Brunello and Daniele Vocaturo, number 2 and 3 in the Italian ranking.

In addition, the International Open “Città di Bergamo” will take place from 18th to 20th July, offering amateurs the chance to challenge some very well-known players from the international scene, such as former world junior champion GM Kiril Georgiev from Bulgaria, who won the event in 2012 and took second place behind Brunello last year, his compatriot GM Alexander Delchev and Serbian GM Ivan Ivanisevic, together with 23 year-old Italian champion GM Danyyil Dvirnyy and 22 year-old GM Axel Rombaldoni.

The event has been launched on May 15th in Bergamo with a press conference attended by Gianpietro Pagnoncelli, president of the Italian Chess Federation; Yuri Garrett, ACP board director and tournament director; Danilo Minuti, councilor for sports of the Bergamo Municipality; and Gianvittorio Perico, head of the organizing Committee.

From the ACP website, it appears that Teimur Radjabov (the one who beat Carlsen in Gashimov Memorial) will not be playing in said tournamen he was replaced by someone else. So that all details in this article is correct except that Teimur Radjabov is not included. Please do correct it. TY

Bummer. It would have been nice to see how So would handle Radjabov’s King’s Indian.

        Dear Mr. TY,
it is unclear where you have read this statement. Mr. Radjabov will indeed take part in the tournament as correctly reported by Mrs. Polgar.

        All best,
        The Organizing Committee
