World champion Carlsen eyes Dubai world titles

      MENAFN – Khaleej Times – 15/06/2014

(MENAFN – Khaleej Times) Matches in the shorter versions of the sport (rapid and blitz) in dubai begin at 3pm.

Magnus Carlsen will be the main draw along with his arch rival and good friend Viswanathan Anand during the third FIDE world rapid and blitz chess championships at the Dubai chess and cultural club from June 15 to 21.

Carlsen will have fond memories of Dubai. it is in this city during the sixth Dubai open chess championships between April 18–28 2004 that Carlsen obtained his third and final gm norm. matches in the shorter versions of the sport (rapid and blitz) in Dubai begin at 3pm.

While playing at the Dubai event with his customary attacking style and unorthodox opening moves that confuses the opposition the current world champion and number one in traditional chess and once chess prodigy became the world’s youngest gm at the time (13 years 148 days).

The 23-year-old Carlsen was convincing when he dethroned Anand in the last world champion’s challenge round in Chennai in 2013 in the main format. after the Chennai world championship success Carlsen said: “big or small advantages against Anand can be temporary phases as he always fights back with superb moves. the final margin here (challenge round in Chennai) indicates a comfortable time for me but we fought out each piece with the same amount of application and focus as in any of the final rounds of a world title match.”

Carlsen who used to adapt rapid and blitzkrieg methods with fiery onslaughts from the word go has now evolved into a more universal player a change that has seen him achieve the potential to reach the world champion’s throne.

Anand has already qualified as the next world championship challenger where the duo will renew their battle late this year.
