Chess match, Eugenio Torre, Rogelio Antonio

GMs Torre, Antonio won’t play tiebreaker; rematch is a draw

Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., the long-time vanguards of Philippine chess, both decided not to play in the deciding Game 7 tie-breaker but instead to share the top honors of their 6-game ‘QC Chess Road Show’ which ended at the Gateway Mall in Araneta Center, Cubao on Friday.

The duel, which is the rematch of their first one-on-one ten years ago, ended in a 3-3 tie after the 56-year-old Torre, Asia’s First GM, beat the 46-year-old Antonio in 42 moves of a London System Opening in Game Six to tie the match.

The six-game battle id part of Quezon City’s sports tourism program.

“No more tie break,” said Torre, in a text message yesterday.

Tournament director Tito Estaris also said “Nagkasundo na ang dalawa na wala ng tie breaker, ang objective naman ng event ay sports tourism na ipakita sa mga tao ang iba’t-ibang significant places sa Quezon City.

“Ang maganda ay nakapag contribute kami ni Eugene (Torre) sa Quezon City at lalong-lalu na sa mga kabataan,” added Antonio, who beat Torre by one point ten years ago during the Centennial Chess Duel in Land Bank, Makati.

After the 1998 Centennial Chess Duel, the two Filipino chess icons also played a one-on-one secret match which also ended in a draw at the Presidential Tower in Timog, Quezon City, as part of Antonio’s preparation for the 1999 Las Vegas World Championships.

the no-balls attitude of the two former top philippine gm’s showed why they were not selected to play for the philippines.

common eugene and antonio, what is the big deal of playing to win, or lose. at least show your guts and glory and prove to the filipinos you still have what it takes.

bobby fischer and spassky played out their second match, remember?

anyways, good luck on your retirement, you two. bring on the hungry young talents.

The two agreed not to have a tie breaker. After all, the objective of the event was to promote sports tourism and to show people the significant places in Quezon City.”

“Ang maganda ay nakapag contribute kami ni Eugene (Torre) sa Quezon City at lalong-lalu na sa mga kabataan,”

What was significant was that Eugene and I were able to contribute to Quezon City, especially its youth.”

they should teach the young kids the true fighting spirit of pacquiao.

not the “agreed” dealings of draws that the chess fans do not like.

chess is not a game of draws. they have contributed nothing to the young kids but that of mediocrity.
