Tucson Time Capsule : Chess coach puts skills to test

      Tucson, Arizona Published: 03.19.2008

The Manzanita Elementary School and Orange Grove Junior High School chess teams needed to raise money to participate in the national championships, so they put their chess skills to work with a fundraiser.

On March 19, 1983, they challenged shoppers at Tucson Mall to games of speed chess. Their coach, Will Wharton, added a little something extra to his challenge: He played blindfolded. In this game, Wharton, a nationally ranked player, was told what moves were made by his opponent, McGarvie Gibson.

Ah, Will, Will. I remember from 20 years ago, when I still played tmt chess, a VERY thin Will sitting on one of those hard plastic chairs, with his knees drawn UP TO HIS FACE. (Think about that for a second) I don’t remember the game at all, or what tournament it was (probably a US Open) – I just remember thinking: what if he had a pipe to smoke?!
