      06.02.2009 12:46 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian will take part in Linares chess 2009 that will take place February 18 – March 8, 2009, in Linares, Spain.

The 26th edition of Torneo Internacional “Ciudad de Linares” will be played only in Spain. The Morelia site will not be on the agenda this year, but the organizers have confirmed that in 2010 the Mexican city will rejoin the competition again.

The closing and awarding ceremony is due on March 8.

This is one lineup I’d like to have seen for a Linares-caliber event:

        Vladimir Kramnik
        Garry Kasparov
        Anatoly Karpov
        Viktor Korchnoi
        Alexander Khalifman
        Rustam Kasimdzhanov
        Gata Kamsky
        Sergey Karjakin

If held outside Tucson, Arizona, it could have been called “Gunfight at the K Corral”.

Note that besides the “K”, the five winners of World Championship events also have ‘a’ as the primary vowel, and the prospect is still open for Kamsky and Karjakin.

Changing his name to Magnus Karlsen might be a smart career move :-).

We are going to have a great month of chess: 1. Kamsky-Topalov
        2. Linares

Actually in Russian, which is probably the more relevant language :-), Carlsen takes his rightful place while Alexander Халифман gets X-ed out:

        Владимир Крамник
        Гарри Каспаров
        Анатолий Карпов
        Виктор Корчной
        Рустам Касымжанов
        Гата Камский
        Сергей Карякин
        Магнус Карлсен

That would be quite an event!

Isn’t it time for Ivanchuk to take a break? He has been playing virtually nonstop.

In 2006 it looked like Aronian might rise to a plausible or likely world chess champion challenger. That looks less now in 2009. Aronian is not enough of a machine at studying the openings.
