of course, you’re right anonymous! Thanks. I hope in a real game I would have seen that (it’s just too simple, isn’t it.. these long diagonals….) but shouldn’t (the much worse and much slower) Bxc5 win, too? Has black any defenses after this second-strongest (?) move?
But all that does not change anything to the fact that Nc5 is good after 1. Rc1?! After that Bc3 is no danger for black.
Might be 1.Rc1, Qxe7;
2.Rxc8+,Kf7;
3.Bxe7,Kxf7;
4.Rg8, with the idea of Rg7.
Black will lose a knight and even so I think won’t prevent h pawn promotion.
I think better than 1. Rc1 would be
1. Qe6+! Kh8
If 1. … Qf7 2. Qxc8+ Qf8 3. Qxf8 mate
2. Rc1 Qxc1
Else White captures on c8 with check.
3. Qe5+ Nf6
4. Qxf6+ Kg8
5. Qg7 mate
Probably missing something simple . . .
no u are not, qe6+ is the winner (instead of Qh4, or even the immediate Rc1)
Second variation (Qe6+) is better, I have to admit I fell to Rc1 at once, too.
But black has (in both cases) the simple defense Nc5!
1. Rc1, Nc5! 2. ?
1. Qe6+, Kh8 2. Rc1, Nc5!? 3. Bxc5 and now bxc5 loses to 4. Rxc5.
Is there any defense after Bxc5?
White can’t play the moves the other way round because after 1. Rc1, Nc5 2. Qe6+ black can play Nxe6.

1. Qe6+! Kh8
If 1. … Qf7 2. Qxc8+ Qf8 3. Qxf8 mate
2. Rc1 Qxc1
If 1… Nc5, 2.Bc3+
3. Qe5+ Nf6
4. Qxf6+ Kg8
5. Qg7 mate
Hi,
I agree with anonymous 7:37:00 AM,
Rc1 after Qe6+ looks like all lines lead
to mate–All I can see for black to do is
to keep checking, such as…
1. Qe6+ Kh8
2. Rc1 Nf3+
3. gxf3 Qc2+
4. Rxc2 Rxc2+
5. Kh3 Nf2+
6. Kh4 g5+
7. Kxg5 Ne4+
8. Kxf5 Ng3+
9. Ke5 Nh5
10. Qe8++
I don´t consider 1.Rc1, Nc5, because of 2.Rxc5 and same sequence.
But now it’s clear the winning is Qe6+ first.
Greetings from Brasil.
Jochen, your suggestion of 1. Qe6+ Kh8 2. Rc1 Nc5!? fails of course to the simple 3. Bc3+.
