      Azerbaijan vs the world

      Azerbaijan, President's Cup


      Match of Rapid Chess between Azerbaijan team and team of FIDE World will take place in Baku from May 7 to May 9, 2009 under Scheveningen system.

      World Champion Viswanathan Anand, vice-champion Vladimir Kramnik, finalist of last World Cup Alexei Shirov and the last winner of one the elite chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee Sergey Karjakin will play in the FIDE World team and in the team of the Azerbaijan will play Teimour Radjabov, Vugar Gashimov, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Gadir Guseinov and Rauf Mamedov.

        Yeah, if they wanted it to be even more uneven, they could have invited Aronian and Topalov instead of Krakjin and Shirov, but that would be like The Cleveland Cavaliers beating the Detroit Pistons 4-0 in this years NBA playoffs.

        What makes you think it will be uneven event?

        I think the “World” will win, but it certainly won’t be a rout.

        Topalov was invited to participate, but had to decline due to prior commitments.
