Wesley to see action in ‘Battle of GMs’

Fresh from his successful conquest of GM Susanto Megaranto in Jakarta over the weekend, GM Wesley So will see action again Friday in the “Battle of the GMs” organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines at the Citystate Tower Hotel in Ermita, Manila.

So (ELO 2540), who is the Philippines’ highest rated chess champ, will battle it out with fellow Pinoy GMs in the 11-round tournament. Aside from So, GMs Eugene Torre and Rogelio Antonio Jr. are listed as contenders in the event that will run until May 3.

It was learned that Singapore-based GM Bong Villamayor is now back in Manila to participate.

Other listed contenders are GM Jayson Gonzales and GM-candidates Julio Catalino Sadorra, Rolando Nolte, Richard Bitoon, John Paul Gomez, Fernie Donguines, Hamed Nouri and Oliver Barbosa.
