Round Robin, but 10 is too few. It was 12 for years, but some thought that a bit short.
Really, the best format would be to go back to a match title, as it was before 1936. But have yearly defenses, maybe with a challenger picked from the US Open or something. That would be more marketable than the tournament.
unfortunately you miss the best choice. You must have a match between the present champion and the challenger.
Your question needs to be about picking the challenger.
I say the few people the better. I would go with maybe 8 players doing matches. this match winner plays the previous champion in a match.
Championship is all about which player can beat all other players. Only a match can determine that.
However, I am willing to use any kind of tournament you choose to pick the challenger. However, You will increase the chances of the best challenger if you severely limit the number of players. If you include low level players you mess up the championship. Only the very best are allowed to compete. That is the hallmark of a Championship.
There you go pick the challenger as the winner of the us open or the world open etc. well obviously it has to be the highest winner of the american players.
Then hold a match. It will be great. People love matches. Nakamura should have played a challenger. What happened to Nakamura was a disgrace. Do not allow that to happen to the Champion. Always treat the Champion with the most respect.

If you read this carefully, you will understand that it is impossible to pick the champion with a tournament. It just does not fit. It is like picking the best downhill skier at a water surfing contest. They are not the same thing.
Today with our knowledge of the mathematics of playing we need to get back to Matches. There is no excuse for the continued use of Tournaments. The present situation with Topalov and Kramnik has brought this all out into debate and because of the debate everyone is understanding this so much better today.
Kramnik is the best player. He proves that in Matches.
Topalov has a high risk tournament style that does best in tournaments. But he is not able to beat Kramnik in a match. Kramnik is the better player. He plays carefully but correctly. Topalov plays unsound suprise moves that help him to win over the board one game.
This year is a Zonal. We need a serious round robin format at the same time control as the next stage of the WC cycle would have. Since the zonal is for “men’s” (or overall), the women’s tournament should be separate this year. If they are separated, 6 round double round robin would be OK if we can decide on the players fairly.
No women’s championship, and a bigger fund for the general one, where everyone belongs.

Round robin! These swisses that they’ve had in the past have been kind of a joke as far as I’m concerned. When someone of my rating can qualify, it takes away from the prestige of a true US Championship. It should be for the top rated active players.
