It was stressed at the Opening Ceremony that this is NOT the traditional chess scoring system. They are using the soccer scoring system with 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
In addition, players who do not attend the official reception at Bilbao’s Town Hall on September 1st or the closing ceremony on September 13th will be fined €6,000!
In an earlier post, I mentioned that I spoke to some of the players. I finally had a chance to speak to Topalov at the Opening Ceremony. We tried to figure out when we saw each other last. We think it was at the Zonal in Budapest in 1993 and Intel Grand Prix a year later. Time really flew by so quickly 🙂
