Breaking News: Judit vs Yifan Hou in the World Cup

Judit Polgar, World Cup, Yifan Hou

I believe that there is a mistake in the pairings. Several GM friends of mine have told me the same thing. We will wait for the confirmation by FIDE.

The World Chess Cup 2011 will take place 26.08-21.09 in Khanty Mansiysk. It is a knock out competition and includes 128 players. The winner qualifies for the next World Chess Championship Candidates event.

The World Cup 2011 is a long event, where the winner has to progress through seven consecutive match victories and possible tiebreaks to reach the top position. However, the competition also has one of the biggest prize funds, amounting to 1.6$ million.

Last year’s winner Boris Gelfand went on to win the Candidates matches and will play the World Chess Championship 2012.

This is so great. This was probably the only way to see them play a one on one.

Ivanov, Shankland, and Robson will have a short stay at World Cup. They will be eliminated in the first round.

I swear this is not fair on Judit and Hou Yifan. Why play such strong females against each other so early!! And don’t tell me its the draw system. This is a setup.

This is a clearly a set up job by FIDE. The wild cards were picked to set this up.

Set up or not,why grumble? Won’t we all love to see a Judith – Yifan matchup? So stop grumbling! And better check on Feller.

Who cares if it is a setup or not? It’s the only way to see such a match (even if it is ko). Whether Hou Yifan plays a man 2700 or a woman 2700, she’s in trouble. But by playing Judit Polgar she’s going to be hyper-motivated. So I honestly don’t want to know if it is a setup or not. It just makes the World cup a little bit more interesting.

Exciting set-up, if any. I agree, the best two women in the world playing each other would otherwise probably never have happened(?), as Judit usually (very successfully) prefers to compete with the absolute world elite. I guess we can expect Judit’s convincing victory, she doesnt need ‘luck’ here imo 😉

        Well yes!
        Good luck, Judit.

I think it’s great Judit will play the Womens World Champion. The gap is getting a little closer between Jutit and the other top women. It’ll be the best 1st round matchup for sure.
