      Newton —

The Cabot School chess team dominated the kindergarten-3rd grade section of the 2009 Massachusetts Scholastic Team Championships, winning all four of its matches decisively to easily defeat all rivals.

Carlisle finished second in the 16-team field, and the Bridge School B team of Lexington was third.

Second grader Alex Fauman led the way for Cabot with a perfect 4.0 score on Board One, with fellow Second grader Evan Meyer scoring 2.5 on Board 2, and third graders Jack Vasu and Devin Coughlin tallying 3 points each on the other boards.

Cabot, which had finished second in last year’s tournament, defeated the host Sage School of Foxboro’s D team, defending champion Buckingham Browne & Nichols of Cambridge, Carlisle, and the John Nixon School of Sudbury in succession en route to its decisive victory.

The Cabot School kindergartden-6th grade team also had a strong tournament, tying for second place with a 3-1 record, but winding up fourth on a tiebreaker as the host Sage School won the title. The defending 6th-9th grade champion Day Middle School reached the last round with a chance to retain its title, but wound up third after losing the decisive match to Jonas Clarke of Lexington.

Cabot coach Larry Eldridge has now led five different schools to the state kindergarten to 3rd grade title, the others being Newton elementary schools Horace Mann and Peirce, along with Cambridge Friends and last year’s champions from BB&N.

A total of eleven Newton schools competed Sunday, March 1 in the annual tournament, which attracted more than 50 schools and 200 players from around the state.

The tournament itself was held in the lovely new gym at The Sage School in Foxboro, MA.
