Caribbean Chess Sub Zonal Begin Friday

HISTORY NOTE Back in the 1960s a few men with interest in Chess playing founded the Bahamas Chess Association as a vehicle to promote the game of Chess in The Bahamas. These Pioneers were the late Dr. Oswald Symonette, Kenneth Adderley, Chris Burrows and Lincoln Davis.

Back in the 1960s a few men with interest in Chess playing founded the Bahamas Chess Association as a vehicle to promote the game of Chess in The Bahamas. These Pioneers were the late Dr. Oswald Symonette, Kenneth Adderley, Chris Burrows and Lincoln Davis.

Following a visit to The Bahamas by Grandmaster Luthar Schmid and his support of The Bahamas’ application for membership to the World Chess Federation, The Bahamas became a member in 1974. The Bahamas has sent teams to the Chess Olympiad on three occasions (1974 in Nice France), (1986 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia) and (1998 Athens, Greece).

NM Antoinette Seymour won the championship for women in the English-speaking Caribbean in the 1980’s. Another Bahamian, Juliet Storr, won the same title two years later.

The Caribbean Chess Sub Zonal 2.3.5 is held every two years and its 15 member countries are invited to participate. Although The Bahamas Chess Federation has not participated in the Caribbean Chess Sub Zonal before now, it has become the first country in the English Speaking Caribbean to host this World Chess Federation tournament.

The Caribbean Chess Sub Zonal 2.3.5 comprises 15 FIDE Member countries namely:
