We learned from Tim Brennan of Colorado Springs that technology is here for most anyone to publish an extensive e-book. We are now reviewing Brennan’s “Tactics Time” (written with Andrea Carson), which is 2,000 pages with 1,000 positions and solutions.
Now we note that a member of the New York Times staff has a website, www.nothingbutchess.com, as Armando G. Colpa presents puzzles and moderates online competition and discussions. The positions alternate between mates in one, two and three, and most are challenging.
The Nashoba Junior Chess Club has begun its season with selected Friday meetings, beginning with instruction by Dr. Imre Toth at 5:30 p.m. at Nashoba Regional High’s cafeteria, 20 Green Road in Bolton. The remaining dates are Feb. 1, 8, March 1, 22 and April 5, and students age 6 to 18 are welcome. More details at www.nashobachess.com.
Winners of the fourth Spiegel Cup Scholastic Qualifier in Marlboro were Luke Lung of Boxboro, Alan Sikarov of Newton and Nikita Roldan-Levchenko of Allston. The age 14, 11 and 8 and under closed finals and the high school open section will be Feb. 10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Marlboro. Alexander Ivanov of Newton and David Vigorito of Andover split first in the Portsmouth (N.H.) Open. Alan Condon of Leominster won the Legend Invitational last Saturday sponsored by the Leominster Chess Association. Daily features appear on Cape Cod’s www.chesscafe.com, now in its 17th year. On Wednesday, Bruce Pandolfini’s “The Q & A Way” answered five questions from amateur players worth noting, most concerning young students being mentored in the game by adults. “The World’s Most Instructive Amateur Game Book,” by Dan Heisman, was also reviewed in depth.
