Over 80 honour chess workshop

CHESS – OVER 80 players participated in the Swaziland National Chess Association development workshop held in the Shiselweni region over the weekend.

The workshop, which is part of the association’s preparations for the national chess tournament slated for July, was held at Matsanjeni High school.

Four schools attended the workshop conducted by last year’s national champion Joel Madondo and these are Oslo, Mazombizwe and Qomintaba primary and high schools.

The association’s secretary, Layidaphansi Dlamini, said they were impressed with the turn-out recorded during the workshop.

“It was good to see a number of youngsters showing interest in the sport. We are hoping to see the same number of players showing up in the next workshop,” he said. He also invited the players to an open tournament to be staged at the George Hotel on Saturday.

“This tournament will help us put into action what was learnt during the workshop. We also invite all players in the country to come and be part of this event,” he appealed.

Dlamini further stated that to be part of the tournament, players would have to part with E50 registration fee to help cover costs.

“We will also use the tournament to raise funds for the association as we are looking to have a number of activities this year,” he said. In conclusion, Dlamini pointed out that all their activities for the year would be played under the theme ‘Play healthy’, adding that they were yet to consult the ministry of health to be part of the events.
