Sofia, Susan, and Judit… I can only imagine the battles they had. What a rivalry.

        Only 3? – there are so many. And in what sense greatest? Among the obvious possibilities are;

Morphy-Staunton (ok, sort of a joke)
        Steinitz-Tchigorin
        Alekhine-Capablanca
        Botvinnik-Smyslov
        Fischer-Soviet chess
        Spaasky-Petrosian
        Karpov-Korchnoi
        Kasparov-Karpov
        Kramnik-Topalov

        I’d vote for the long-contested ones: Steinitz-Chigorin, Botvinnik-Smyslov, Karpov-Korchnoi, and Kasparov-Karpov

There are and were so many. And many resulted with one of the combatants avoiding the battle.
        IE: Morphy/ Staunton
Alekhine/Capablanca my god…he gave bogolyubov two !!! matches….who was he kidding?
        Kramnik/ Kasparov
I think we all know who was avoiding who in this case.

Karpov must be commended to meeting it head on.
Karpov/Korchnoi marathons….and then it got even crazier..
the amazing Kasparov Karpov clashes. A real treat for modern players to look at top flight no holds barred chess.
How about Kasparov vs Silicon valley? That was a lot of fun to watch.
Fischer/ Rest of the world was fun..but like Alekhine…he sort of avoided the sharpest fights after winning the title.(For whatever reasons)
Kasparov it must be said NEVER backed down and I seriously have to respect that.
1St World champ to lose to a machine.
1st world champ to lose to a woman
1st world champ to lose to a kid.(Radjabov)
        (In a regular tournament game..)
I mean..that guy just never shied away from a fight and fearlessly always showed up for the fight no matter what. His style DID calm down in his later years…sort of reminded me of Botvinnik..but I remember what Botvinnik did to Tal in the rematch….he was still amazing..(I think the computer matches affected his style)
Capa DID lose against Botvinnik when he (Botvinnik) was a kid but we have to at least accept that it was only a simul game.
        Fischer/Reshevsky was also a great Rivalry…so was Fine/Reshevsky.

I could go on and on..but I may as well leave room for others to write..haha…regards everyone.

“1st world champ to lose to a woman”
        isnt exactly true.
Euwe lost gainst Vera Menchik before….
And my answer to the question:
        Nimzovich-Tarasch
        Fischer-restoftheworld
        are clearly shared first place
        3rd probably
        Korchnoi-Karpov

Don’t forget the rivalrie Tarrasch – Lasker. The chess world had to wait from 1892 to 1908 until a match took place.

A rivalry that nobody saw is hardly one of the greatest rivalries of all time. The great ones are ones we can do more than “only imagine”.
