Chess teaching expanding in Azerbaijani schools
      14 September 2013, 14:24 (GMT+05:00)
      By Sabina Idayatova

Given the importance of chess playing in the intellectual development of school students, the list of pilot schools in Azerbaijan where it will be taught is being expanded, in accordance with an order of Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov.

Chess will be taught in the 2013/2014 academic year in the schools selected in the past few years as pilot educational institutions.

The new subject will be taught one hour a week.

At present, pupils of the third grades at 75 pilot schools, and the second grades at 379 secondary schools are taught chess classes.

In general, there are a number of chess masters in Azerbaijan, and it is important to attract them to teaching chess to the younger generation.

More than 36,000 pupils are learning how to play this fascinating board game.

Improving the logistics, provision of modern equipment, computers, textbooks and educational materials at local schools has been in the focus of the Education Ministry.
