      Check mates!

      Oct. 31, 2012, 3:17 p.m.

ESPERANCE Anglican Community School was abuzz with shouts of“check mate!” on Thursday, as the third annual Chess Congress took place.

Chess Congress organiser Iain Clark said that the competition stemmed from his passion for chess.

“I wanted to expand our school chess tournament to an inter-school competition and get as many youngsters as possible involved,” Mr Clark said.

Students from Castletown Primary School, Nulsen Primary School, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, Esperance Christian Primary School, Esperance Primary School, Salmon Gums Primary School, Grasspatch Primary School and Scaddan Primary School competed in the junior division, with Grass Patch Primary School taking first place.

Students from Esperance Senior High School and Esperance Anglican Community School competed in the senior division, with Esperance Senior High School winning gold.

Mr Clark said the Chess Congress had grown each year since 2010.

“The competition has gone from 16 chess enthusiasts to 48 this year,” Mr Clark said.

“With 24 games being played at any one time and 168 matches over the entire day, it’s safe to say that chess is the real winner.”
