International women’s master Iryna Zenyuk is the main attraction for Jackson Chess Club’s tournament June 13.

Club president Brad Smith explained that the Ukraine native will play a simul with all tournament participants. He expects 30 players.

A “simul” is simultaneous exhibition where a single player (usually a master or good player) plays several people all at the same time.

Numerous boards are set up, in a circle or rectangle, and the single player stands “inside” this area, moving from board to board, usually playing a single move at a time.

“We’ll have the tables set up in a horseshoe shape. She’ll be on the inside and go to each board.

There’s no time limit in a simul. She’ll make her move and go on to the next player. When she comes back, the player has to make a move in front of her. They are allowed one pass,” Smith said.

Zenyuk’s appearance is provided through Mid-South Chess in Memphis, where she will be the guest at a weeklong camp. The simul is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Host for the tournament is attorney Robert Hill, who played as a teen, “took a long, long hiatus” and started playing again about six months ago.

“It’s an intellectual stimulator,” said Hill, who is teaching the game to his 11-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. Both attend the University School of Jackson, which used to have a chess club.
