1.Nxg6+,Kh8 or gxh6. 2.Nf7+, (if 1…Kh8)Kg8 3.Qh5, ready to pounce without opposition on h8 or h7, for mate!! 2.Qe6+,(if 1…gxh6)Kg7 or Kh8 3.Qg6 or Qh7, mate!!
Here I initially saw black’s strong defence move Nf6 to be a main hindrance for a white win (beside of the a1=Q threat and the fact that black has more material allready).
Both closing f file for white rook, and opening back rank for black rooks, this move seems to spoil any white attack idea.
i think Nxh6+ might be a good move. if 1. … gxh6, then 2. Qe6+ Kg7 (Kh8, 3. Qg8#) 3. Qf7+ Kh8 4. Qh7# well, and if 1. … Kh8, then mavbe 2. … oh wait, it`s a case of smothered mate! what a fool i was. 1. Qe6 Nf6 2. Nxh6+ Kh8 3. Qg8+ Kxg8 4. Nf7# 1. … g6 2. Nxh6+ Kg7/h7 (Kh8, 3. Qg8#) 3. Qxg6+ Kh8 4. Qh7# greets, jan

2.Qe6+,(if 1…gxh6)Kg7 or Kh8
3.Qg6 or Qh7, mate!!
Black is busted after 1. Nxh6+.
Including even the most lame moves by Black:
1. Nxh6+ Kh8
(1. .. gxh6 2. Qe6+ Kh8 (2. .. Kg7 3. Qg6+ Kh8 4. Qh7#) 3. Qxh6+ Kg8 4. Qh7#)

4. Bxg6! Qg7

After which black can delay mate only for a few more moves.

Still I try:
1. Nxh6+ gxh6??
2. Qe6+ Kg7 (2. … Kh8 3. Qxh6+ Kg8 4. Qh7#)
3. Qf7+ Kh8
4. Qh7#
Of course black answeres:
1. Nxh6+ Kh8!
2. Nf7+ (what else?) Kg8
Well, should I now perhaps go for a draw by perpetual?
I guess not!
3. Bh7+! Kf8 (3. … Kxh7? 4. Qh5+ Kg8 5. Qh8#)
I still think about the concern I had initially, I hate to see Nf6 and I dont want g6 either. Then I find:
4. Qe6! Nf6
5. Nd8!
Double threat Qf7# and Qg8#.
Black now has only delaying sacks I think.
Very nice (and difficult) puxzzle.
Not too lengthy, but still hard to find moves 3, 4 and 5 here:
1. Nxh6+ Kh8
2. Nf7+ Kg8
3. Bh7+! Kf8
4. Qe6! Nf6
5. Nd8!
i think Nxh6+ might be a good move. if
1. … gxh6, then
2. Qe6+ Kg7 (Kh8, 3. Qg8#)
3. Qf7+ Kh8
4. Qh7#
well, and if
1. … Kh8, then mavbe
2. …
oh wait, it`s a case of smothered mate! what a fool i was.
1. Qe6 Nf6
2. Nxh6+ Kh8
3. Qg8+ Kxg8
4. Nf7#
1. … g6
2. Nxh6+ Kg7/h7 (Kh8, 3. Qg8#)
3. Qxg6+ Kh8
4. Qh7#
greets, jan
1.Nxh6+ Kh8
(1…gxh6 2.Qe6+ Kg7
(2…Kh8 3.Qxh6+ Kg8 4.Qh7#)
3.Rf7+ Kg8 4.Rh7+ Kf8 5.Qf7#)
2.Nf7+ Kg8
3.Bh7+ Kf8
(3…Kxh7 4.Qh5+ Kg8 5.Qh8#)
4.Ne5+ Nf6
(4…Bf6 5.Ng6+ Kf7 6.Qe7#)
5.Ng6+ Kf7
6.Qxe7#
Rxh6!
I have to make a new try here!
1. Nxh6+ Kh8
2. Nf7+ Kg8
3. Bh7+ Kf8
That far it should be clear, but now I had:
4. Qe6??
Seems absolutely wrong.
Seems likely that move 4 should be a discoveres check instead, but where to put that knight?
Could it be:
4. Nh8+! Nf6
5. Qh5!! Bd5 (Nxh5 prohibited)
6. Qxd5 Ke8
7. Bg6+ Kf8
8. Qf7#
4. … Bf6
5. Qe6 Nd6
6. Ng6#
4. … Qf6
5. Rxf6 Nxf6
6. Qe6 Ke8
7. Bg6+
I guess black is finished also here after some moves…
8. Ng7+
Lucymarie’s analysis is correct and very complete.
