        Alexander Alekhine
        Jose R. Capablanca
        Frank Marshall
        Edward Lasker

Now, thats an easy one for a change, from left to right – sitting Lasker, standing Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshal and sitting Tarrasch
        I bet on that

        Yes, i can!

In front sitting from left to right:
        Lasker and Tarrasch

Behind them standing from left to right: Aljechin, Capablanca, Marshall

        Standing: Alekhine, Capablanka, Marshall
Seated: Lasker and ??? (maybe Tarrasch)

I think the three standing players are, from left to right- Alekhine (about 95% sure), Capablanca (100% sure), and Frank Marshall (about 90% sure).

If I am right, then the guy on the left who is sitting is probably Lasker. I have no clue to the other person sitting is.

Lasker and Capablanca are easy enough to recognize. I’d assume the other 3 are Alekhine, Marshall, and Tarrasch.

Lasker, Alekhine, Capablaca, Marshall but I’m guessing at the dude seated across Lasker. (Tarrasch??)

Clockwise from the uniform: Alekhine, Cabablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch, and Lasker. Did they dress this way to play, or for the photo?

        Hint:
These are the original five GMs. The title was invented for them and given by the Russian Zar himself.

It looks like Lasker and Janowski at the board with someone I don’t recognize along with Capablanca and Marshall in the background. I assume its from San Sebastian 1911.

It’d be great if there was a way to find the answers after the quiz, I’d love to learn more about the chess celebrities posted in the quizes.

Probably at the 1914 St. Petersburg Tournament. Alekhine was 22 years old at the time.

This is a very historical picture: seated, left to right: Lasker and Tarrasch; standing, left to right: Alekhine, Capablanca, and Marshall. If I remember well, this is from Saint Petersburg, 1914, won by Lasker. These were the five finalists.

It is surprising to me that Tarrasch was still alive then. Tarrasch wrote the first chess instruction book I read as a teenager.

If this was from the St. Petersburg tourney of 1914, then it was just prior to the outbreak of World War I.

Someone should invent a new title today to recognize the truly elite today….

        There are more grandmasters than
