Jonathan Mestel, comtemporary of Nunn and Speelman.

One of England many amateur GMs. Hugely talented, could doubtless have got a lot stronger if he had played full time.

But he is rather good at maths and chose that as his career instead.

I think it is Jon Speelman.

Bobby Fischer… I recognize him by the insane twinkle in his eyes.

World Problem Solving Champion (1997) Jonathan Mestel, the first person to be both an over-the-board GM & a GM of Problem Solving.

He has also won the British Championship 3 times, the first time in 1976 starting with an amazing & uncatchable 9 out of 9 in the 11 round Championship.

Is it Mestel, Speelman, or Hubner?

        Inquiring minds want to know.

That is the legend that is Jonathan Mestel. My lecturer at Imperial College and one of the smartest people you’ll ever meet.
