      2800, Chess Ratings, chess trivia

Magnus Carlsen became only the 5th player in history to break 2800. Can you name the other 4 by order of achievement date?

Bonus question: Can you name the exact peak ratings of the other 4 players who broke 2800 (without looking it up)?

I really have no idea, sorry to disappoint you.

On yet another note, I’ve been looking at the chessbase crosstable here

and the numbers say that more rating has been won than lost. How is this possible, when all players were GMs?

        I think Kasparov’s peak was 2852
and Topa is peaking now (2812)
Not much higher one can get, unless he beats 2700+ players on regular basis.

        Fischer, Kasparov, Anand and Topalov.

The reason the rating points don’t balance out is that
the points are based on a fairly complex formula.
But basically if player A beats player B, the amount of points that player A goes up does not equal the amount of points lost by player B.

Thanks for the explanation! Is this the reason of the so-called rating inflation?

        Kasparov 2851
        Kramnik 2811
        Topalov 2813
        Anand 2803
        Carlsen 2801 (and still counting)

        P.S.
Fischer should be 2885, if rating inflation of about 100 points also counted, his peak rating was 2785.

Kramnik peak rating is either 2811 or 2809. It’s one of those FIDE mysteries 🙂

There is some magic ceiling at 2813 for Topalov. He reached this rating over 3 years a part but seems unable to pass it. He would have passed it if he had scored just half a point more in Nanjing. It is just luck- he might well make 2820 soon who knows.
