That is Dieter Liviu Nisipeanu. I watched him play in the 1999 FIDE World Chess Championship at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and thought he was the cutest man of the group 🙂 I believe he was the youngest player. I had gone to LV to meet up with friends and also to see Judit Polgar play in person. She was in the quarter finals against Khalifman on August 13, 1999, a Friday. She got a draw, but it wasn’t enough and she was out of the competition on mhy first day there, so unfortunately I did not get to see any more of her play. Nisipeanu made it all the way through the semi-finals before losing the last game – I think it was to Khalifman, who eventually defeated Vladimir Akopian for the title. Mickey Adams was the other semi-finalist who lost. At the end of Nisipeanu’s last game, everyone in the small audience gave him a standing ovation. Ancient history now, but I remember it as if it was yesterday. That was the first and only World Chess Championship I’ve ever attended. Actually, that was the ONLY chess tournament I’ve ever attended 🙂
