Criminey. There are five comments so far, and four of them are juvenile comments on her looks. Gee, I wonder why teenage girls drop out of chess? -Jim

“Gee, I wonder why teenage girls drop out of chess?”

Because most pleasant girls are too busy going on dates and spending less time playing chess. It has something to do with birds and bees.

Speaking as a scientist, she is indeed a fine specimen of womanhood.

One can clearly see she is ready for some hot, sweaty, passionate, throbbing, … chess.

Guys, don’t say that. Makes Jim start whining again. Maybe next time post a picture of an old sweaty Grandmaster and my remark “Always hard at work” would also stir him up…

Actually she isn’t so hot if you look at other pictures (not from the North Urals opening ceremony). Just a regular young lady.

Anon @ 3:12 – That’s not a bad idea. Maybe I’ll just make a bunch of “What a STUD” comments every time a male chess player shows up.

Seriously, people. Do you think this behavior is charming? Do you think it is a successful way to attract the opposite sex? Think what you want about her, fine, I don’t care. Just realize that, when you’re on the Internet, you are in public. Behave accordingly.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that my daughter could pursue any number of hobbies and/or professions without this neanderthal display of public drooling. But not chess.

        Sad.

Over the few decades of tournament chess and revisiting the relatively few females making appearances in adult tournaments, I can’t remember a single incident of drooling or “stud comments’ etc..

Quit whining Jim. If your daughter quits chess it’s because she found more interesting things to do.

Oh, so now only GIRLS are going on dates?

I’m not asking why they’re not spending 3 hours a day studying openings. I’m asking why they stop coming to the casual scholastic swiss about the time they turn 13.

        Scientist, my foot.

According to some chess journalists, 13 is a good age to start pestering girls for special favors. Right Sam?

        “What’s her phone number!”

You mean “What’s her phone number?”

She looks better on photo then live. Live she’s just another female that went astray by playing chess instead of cooking and washing dishes.

Why doesn’t Laugherty come to Dallas and ask the question himself there? My guess is he’s afraid. The big chicken who hides behind his keyboard! Hahaha!

Experience tells me that when a woman goes to all that effort to get fixed up, she’ll be disappointed if she doesn’t evoke some sort of pleasant response. Other pictures from the North Urals Cup opening ceremony made me wonder if a trip to the stylist wasn’t a perk for the contestants.

In general, I’d like to encourage players of both sexes to look better at tournaments, at least for honorific occasions. During the games is a different story. Marie Sebag is always well groomed, and Eti Stefanova seems to make up to a suitable extent. And I’d better quit while I’m ahead.

No hypocrisy here. I’m just saying that not every thought that pops into your mind needs to be expressed in public.

BBC fans may remember a similar example in As Time Goes By. Jean has described one of her secretaries to a client as “very pretty”, and the secretary objected. “I don’t mind being found pretty, quite the contrary,” the secretary explained. “I just don’t want that to be how my employer describes me.”

Jimmyboy, it’s neandertal behavior, without an ‘h’. Do not try to be too sophisticated here.

Internet is fun and you can expect all kind of remarks. Actually, in my view those here were funny.

Post ANY picture and there will be mocking or funny remarks. Post a picture of an attractive female chess player – and there are not many of them (unfortunately) – and you know what to expect.

Do not take the internet more serious than life, dude…
