      Cleveland Chess

      Cleveland, Illya Nyzhnyk

Cleveland Chess is designed to promote chess in the Greater Cleveland area and throughout all of Ohio. Our Scholastic League welcomes any students currently in grades K-8 to participate.

The current article is about the new Ukrainian phenom. He is now an IM and I believe he has 2 GM norms. He is on pace to beat Karjakin’s record as the youngest GM in the world.

      FM Illya Nyzhnyk
      Ілля Нижник

Illya was born on September 27, 1996 in Ukraine.

When he was just ten years old he won the B section of the Moscow Open in the midst of a very strong field. In 2007 he won the European Youth Championships with a score of 8.5 out of 9. His current rating is 2504. Look for Illya to rise quickly into the top ranks of the world’s greatest chess players.

As technological advances in computer chess programs increase – so does the talent of our youth!

It is nice to see that Cleveland’s history of welcoming people from Central Europe continues. I remember when so many people came after the 1956 revolution in Hungary. Now that the strongest US born player lives in Hungary and plays for Italy, it is good to see more strong young players arrive.
