Armenian Parliament chairman congratulates national chess team
      September 09, 2012 | 23:30

YEREVAN. – In his Facebook account, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan congratulated everyone in connection with Armenia’s men’s national team’s victory at the 40th World Chess Olympiad, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I congratulate us all for the next brilliant achievement of our golden chess team. Thank you, boys, for the truly marvelous game, your will and determination, and the unique moments you endowed us. You held our country’s honor high. Today’s hero of Azerbaijan is a murderer, whereas you are the hero of the Armenian nation. I wish you new heights, joy and success. Bravo!”, Hovik Abrahamyan wrote.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, the Armenian national anthem was played and the national flag was raised in Istanbul during the official closing ceremony of the 40th World Chess Olympiad, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey, as Armenia’s men’s national team was crowned world champion for a third time.

Levon Aronian and Vladimir Akopian received medals for best individual achievements. Aronian won another gold medal for best results – seven points out of ten possible – on the first board. Vladimir Akopian won silver medal for best results – 7.5 points out of ten possible – on the third board.

In the final and decisive round, the Armenian team defeated Hungary by a score of 2.5-1.5. Sergei Movsesian defeated Zoltan Almasi while Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian and Levon Aronian ended their games in a draw against Judit Polgar, Ferenc Berkes and Peter Leko respectively.

To note, the Armenian men’s national chess team became Olympiad champion for the first time in Turin in 2006, and it was crowned champion for a second time in 2008 at the Chess Olympiad in Dresden.
