Cuban Chess GM Leinier Dominguez Tops Standings at SPICE Cup in the United States
      Thursday, 20 October 2011 13:25

Havana, Cuba, Oct 20.- After a very good result at last September’s World Cup of Chess in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia —where he and compatriot Lazaro Bruzon advanced to the Round of 16—, Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Dominguez continues his excellent performance this year and he is currently topping the standings of the Fifth annual SPICE Cup, the highest rated international invitational tournament in the United States, that is under way in Lubbock, Texas.

Dominguez, the best Latin American chess player with an ELO rating of 2,710, is playing against Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem (2,717), French GM Sebastien Feller (2,668), German GM Georg Meier (2,648), and American GMs Yury Shulman (2,608) and Ray Robson (2,583).

In the last match of the first round on Wednesday, Dominguez played with the white pieces and downed Le Quang Liem after 59 moves of a French Defense.

In the other results on Wednesday, Robson and Shulman tied and Meier defeated Feller.

With this result, the Cuban player is ahead with nine units after two wins and three draws. The Vietnamese player is second with eight points while all the other participants have six units apiece.

The tournament is taking place using a double round-robin system and no draw offer is allowed prior to move 30. Unlike the traditional point-awarding system, three points are being granted to the winners of each game and each player receives one unit in case of a draw.

The competition, a Category 17 event with an average ELO rating of 2,656, resumes on Friday. (ACN)

        “…Nakamura could win this by 3 points…”

Yes, and he could also lose by getting up for OJ.

Get real. You can’t take Nakamura seriously if he doesn’t take himself seriously.
