Countdown to the Leko vs Ivanchuk match

      Chess match, Ivanchuk, Peter Leko

      Rapid Chess Match
      26 – 28 October 2007 Mukachevo (the Ukraine)

Mukachevo, a small town located in the western Ukraine, will be the venue of an attractive chess event at the end of October 2007: Vassily Ivanchuk (the Ukraine) and Peter Leko (Hungary) will compete in a Rapid Chess Match twelve games. The number one of Hungary against the number one of the Ukraine – the two neighbouring countries send their best to the duel in Mukachevo.

The competition was originated by the initiative of Josef Resch, who looks forward to the battle between these two top stars. UEP president Resch celebrated his 50th birthday this year – and on the occasion of this anniversary the idea of an extraordinary chess event was implemented.

The duel of the two players from “top ten” promises to be exciting: the 38 years old Ivanchuk becomes stronger; he has demonstrated his shape by winning important tournaments lately. In July he won the well-staffed rapid chess tournament in Odessa.

Peter Leko (28) was not lucky to win his home game in Miskolc against Vladimir Kramnik (Russia): in May the Hungarian lost the rapid chess match against the World Chess Champion by 3.5:4:5 points. But Leko’s growth of the season still impends – the World Chess Championship Tournament in Mexico-City – and Leko convincingly qualified for this tournament.

The schedule of the competition in Mukachevo: four rapid games will be played every day (October 26, 27 and 28). The time control for each game is ten minutes plus ten seconds per move.

I’m afraid Kramnik will crush him.

        Below the text from the russian http://www.chesspro.ru site, the summary of GM Aleksandr Morozevich radio interview, sorry do not have time to translate all;
Morozevich counted Ivanchuk as the World Champion Player, the same level as Karpov and Kasparov, he think that currently Ivanchuk is the strongest world chess player, as Kramnik and Anand both have the strongest support team, as Ivanchuk is alone. Morozevich thinks that Topalov is a cheater (but great player also), although he do not have any evidence. The most of the top players also think that Topalov is a cheater. Morozevich byself will miss the next World Cup because he do not want to play a match against Topalov in case if he will win, he thinks it would illegal match. (Also Gelfand and Leko #3 and #4 from Mexico will skip the next World cicle)

It is Ukraine not “the Ukraine”.
        No reason for “the”…
