      Cuba finished 11th in Istanbul

Havana, Cuba, Sept 10.- The Cuban men’s Chess team finished in the 11th position at the Istanbul World Chess Olympiad, held in Turkey, after defeating Slovenia in the eleventh and last round 2,5 to 1,5.

Cubans Leinier Dominguez and Isan Ortiz led the actions on tables one and fourth repectively as they got the two necessary points, PL news agency reported from Ankara.

The Cuban chess masters, who arrived at the championship holding position 17 in the world ranking, made their best historic performance in Novi Sad-1990 and Calvian-2004 after they got the seventh position in both events.

Brazilians and Mexicans followed the Cubans on behalf of Latin America after finishing in positions 39 and 43 respectively.

In the women’s category, Cuba also took the Latin American lead in the 19th position, despite a 2-2 tie-up with Colombia.

Cuban Lisandra Ordaz got the only success of her team after wining over Aura Cristina Salazar in the first board, while on the third, Maritza Arribas lost to Beatriz Irene Franco.

Russia took the gold, China garnered the silver and Ukraine reserved the bronze. (ACN)
